The concert will contain a program of 20th century French music featuring the Songs of the Auvergne by Joseph Canteloube. The Songs of the Auvergne are the pieces for which Joseph Canteloube is most well know. Canteloube came from the province of Auvergne in the south of France, and set many of its old folk songs for orchestra in the 1920 sand 30s. They are rarely performed outside of France for 2 reason; firstly because of the old French dialects- being a combination of old French, Italian and Portugese – and are very difficult to pronounce; and secondly, because the reductions of the accompaniments for piano are fiendishly difficult.

These songs will be performed with a modern English translation by Dr Peter Butler and with the difficult accompaniments shared between the piano and the flute. The remainder of the program will reflect a diverse repertoire of instrumental and vocal French music featuring works by Martinu, Bozza and Bizet.
