Welcome to Season 2009
Great Australian drama spanning 35 years features in our Theatre Season 2009.
Jack Hibberd's Australian classic A Stretch of the Imagination was first performed in 1972. In 2009 the irascible character Monk O'Neil will be resurrected by John Wood who Bendigo has most recently seen in The Club, David Williamson's, Travelling North celebrates 30 years of productions by touring to Bendigo. Starring Terrance Donovan and Sandy Gore this wonderful, heart warming production is sure to delight.
And now to recent works. From Porkchop Productions, the team that brought us the unforgettable Last Cab to Darwin in 2004 comes Brilliant Monkey nominated for Best Independent Production at the 2008 Sydney Theatre Awards.
We explore the 'Wheat for Weapons' scandal in Version 1.0's Deeply Offensive and Utterly Untrue, the personal stories of the ill-fated crew of The Kursk, the life of Cat Stevens in Wild World, and a couple's search for fulfilment in Baby Boomer Blues. An amazing array of Australian plays indeed.
Also featuring is Steel Magnolias. The film starred the likes of Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley McLean and more. Likewise this Australian production stars a stellar cast including Jackie Weaver, Geraldine Turner and Debra Lawrence. We round off our dramas with Bell Shakespeare's comedy the Taming of the Shrew featuring an all-female cast.
Victorian Opera return with Don Giovanni by Mozart and Da Ponte. Our dance offering for 2009 is Dancenorth's Nightcafe. Dance, theatre and live gypsy music come together in this wonderfully accessible performance.
We hope you enjoy Theatre Season 2009 as much as we enjoy bringing it to you.
